About Dr
Carmel is a Clinical Psychologist passionate about the treatment of eating, weight and body image concerns, and empowering women of all shapes and sizes. She has a special interest in supporting those with binge eating disorder.
She is passionate about over coming barriers to accessing eating disorder treatment by providing treatment at BodyMatters online via E-therapy and has clients all over Australia who were unable to access services locally, or found travel a barrier.
Her therapeutic approach is warm, supportive and client focused, encouraging the identification of her client’s goals, values and strengths in order to shape therapy. The evidence-based approaches she commonly uses are Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT-E) integrating Compassion Focused Strategies, Mindfulness based intervention and Interpersonal Psychotherapy. She is also trained in the Maudsley Model for Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults (MANTRA), Motivational Interviewing, Family Based Therapy (Maudsley Model) and Schema Therapy and works with clients experiencing eating, weight and body image concerns of all ages.
She has worked in the private practice setting since 2014 alongside GPs and psychologists and completed her qualifications at the Australian National University and holds a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) and a Clinical PhD (clinical training as well as a research PhD). The research component of her Clinical PhD focused on binge eating, in particular the role of overvaluing shape and/or weight towards one’s self-worth and has published a range of articles with an eating, weight and body image focus. She is a full member of the Australian Psychological Society and the Australian and New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders.
Carmel is a board approved supervisor and offers supervision for clinicians seeking to meeting eating disorder credentialling requirements. She regular runs workshop training in cognitive behavioural therapy for binge eating disorder.
Carmel offers rebates under Medicare and provides online therapy on Mondays and Tuesdays. Additionally, she works with clients who seek therapy from a Christian worldview.
